Catalysis Challenge at Ircelyon: When Science Becomes a Game!

At the heart of catalysis research, Ircelyon has taken on an original challenge: to train and raise awareness about catalysis through an online game. Developed by the team of Professor Bert Weckhuysen (University of Utrecht), this game, led by Thomas Hartman and Martijn H., immerses players in the Sabatier reaction (hydrogenation of CO₂ to produce water). The goal? To produce as much water as possible to survive, while understanding the fundamental mechanisms of catalysis.

An Engaging and Stimulating Competition

To make the experience even more engaging, Ircelyon organized an open internal competition for everyone: master’s students, PhD candidates, post-doctoral researchers, and permanent staff.

Over several weeks, participants explored the nuances of the game. The results? A tight classification, where every detail counts to optimize water production.

The Winner Is… Axel Robert!

Congratulations to Axel Robert, master’s student, who won the title of “Top Catalysis Scientist” in the game! His impressive score of 808.71 L of water produced narrowly beat his peers:

• Emma Clerc (Research Engineer): 805.05 L
• Anton Larchier (PhD candidate): 805.03 L
