Expertise in High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry
Discover our expertise in Gazette du Laboratoire’s May 2026 feature on high-resolution mass spectrometry. This article highlights Ircelyon’s high-resolution mass spectrometry pole, specializing in atmospheric chemistry (CARE team).
Cutting-edge technology
Our team employs mobile Orbitrap (Thermo Fisher) spectrometers, combined with internal developments. For example, the Wall-E system allows direct analysis of aerosols in the air. Thanks to these innovations, we achieve exceptional detection levels down to 10⁻¹² or 10⁻¹⁵, paving the way for major advances in understanding atmospheric chemical processes.
Diverse and impactful applications
Furthermore, our applications extend beyond atmospheric chemistry, covering fields such as:
– analysis of gaseous emissions from agricultural soils (impact of pesticides and fertilizers);
– biomedical research, including the COVID-AIR project to detect molecular markers of infections from exhaled air;
– development of new ionization sources to expand the applications of mass spectrometers, particularly for small reactors or biological systems.
A collaborative and innovative approach
These projects rely on international collaborations and tools like the open-source software Orbitool, designed to process massive real-time data streams. Hosted at the CNRS, this software is now used by over 320 scientists worldwide.
The Gazette du Laboratoire feature underscores Ircelyon’s role in analytical innovation, technology transfer, and scientific partnerships for research in chemistry and environmental studies.
